Be prepared on the road: What spare parts should I carry in my RV?

Exploring Canada on the road is the best way to travel and get outside this summer, and we want to help you make the most of it. After a full summer of adventures, you may find that there are parts of your RV that are showing signs of wear and tear. Learning how to repair minor fixes is part of the fun of camping, but being prepared can help to minimize the stress of unexpected mishaps. From essentials to fun accessories to make life at the campground easier, we’ve got you covered for all your spare parts needs at Grove RV.

Will used RV parts work for my RV?

While used RV parts are affordable, something must be said for peace of mind. RV parts are designed for short-term, intermittent use during the summer months compared to everyday use. Long periods without use can result in the part failing early, ultimately costing you more in the long run. Each of our used RVs is inspected for faulty parts and serviced before being made available on the lot. Safety should be front of mind at all times when it comes to replacing parts on a propane or gas system. Faulty parts can result in a gas leak, putting you at risk of exposure and creating a fire hazard. As a rule of thumb, never install a used RV part on a critical RV system!

Building a spare parts kit: What 10 items should I have?

Wherever you go this summer, it pays to be prepared. Canada has so many adventures to be had, some quite literally off the beaten path. A failed part can leave you stranded at any point in time, but having spare parts on hand in an emergency kit can greatly reduce your wait time for repairs.

  • Spare tire: Check to ensure that your RV has a spare tire on board. If it has never been used, inspect it for dry rot and it is still in good condition.
  • Fuses: A blown fridge can impact stoves, fans, and the RV fridge. Having a spare fuse on hand can save you time and patience by avoiding the risk of food spoiling and being stuck due to stalled appliances and parts.
  • AC generator filter: Your filter works to capture allergens and smoke from the air without restricting airflow inside your RV.
  • LP gas regulator: The regulator works to control excessive pressure in your RV’s propane system, a part that is crucial to your safety while operating the system. Do not attempt to use the RV propane system without an LP gas regulator installed.
  • RV awning parts: An RV awning is designed to last between 5 – 15 years, but awning brackets and assembly arms can become damaged with use, making it difficult to properly store.
  • Sealant: Roof leaks can cause damage if left unattended, but having sealant on hand can help to limit greater risks of water damage from leaks. Be careful when choosing the type of sealant to ensure that it does not void your warranty.
  • Furnace electrodes and switches: If your furnace does not start up or respond to changes in the thermostat, you may have a failed switch, gas valve, or blocked vent.
  • Batteries: Apart from the primary RV batteries, it is good to have a variety of AA, AAA, and sensor-specific batteries in the case of a propane or TPMS sensor failure.
  • Water pump valves: If your water pump is showing signs of leaking, failure to start, or loud noises while in use, you may have a loose or cracked valve that can result in a failed pump.
  • Bearings, shackles, and bolts: While these are not common to have on hand, a broken bearing, shackle or bolt can leave your RV dead in the water as it impacts your brakes and suspension.

When assembling your emergency kit, it is important to note that your kit should be unique to your RV. Note what features your RV is equipped with, and the recommended models for replacement parts. Our online RV parts and accessories catalogue has a wide range of parts for you to check out while building your spare parts kit.
