5 Hidden Benefits of a Cargo Trailer

Has the time finally come to consider a new cargo trailer? From increasing your storage space to saving money without the need to rent a trailer for every big load, the value of a cargo trailer is wildly understated. Unlike an RV, cargo trailers open up a whole new can of worms when it comes to insurance policies, towing, and usage. In this blog, we will cover all the basics, from insurance recommendations to benefits to our best practices for buying a cargo trailer. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just dipping your toes into the cargo trailer world, stick around to discover why owning one might be more beneficial than you think!

Do cargo trailers need insurance?

Within Alberta, there are no mandatory trailer insurance requirements for cargo trailers. Unlike an RV, cargo trailers are not a self-propelled recreational vehicle. That being said, most car insurance policies do not apply to cargo trailers in situations like a collision. How you will use the cargo trailer may dictate how much insurance you want on the cargo trailer even when it is unhitched. Some insurance policies that can be applied to cargo trailers include travel trailer liability, comprehensive, collision, and emergency roadside assistance. Travel trailer liability insurance is applied in the case of an accident or injury resulting from the trailer, while comprehensive insurance protects you from other damages such as vandalism, theft, hail or fire. Collision insurance will cover your cargo trailer from damages resulting from an accident with a stationary object, vehicle, or the ground. Finally, emergency roadside insurance will cover the cost of unexpected breakdowns while you are in transit. By opting for insurance coverage, you can have peace of mind knowing that your trailer is covered hitched or unhitched.

How long do cargo trailers last?

A cargo trailer’s life expectancy depends on three factors: the quality of the trailer, its type, and how well it is maintained. The average life expectancy of a cargo trailer is between 10 to 15 years, but enclosed cargo trailers last longer than open trailers. If the trailer is made out of cheaper materials, you will see signs of wear and tear after a year, but other factors can impact how long it will last. Extreme heat, cold, saltwater conditions and high humidity will cause your cargo trailer to deteriorate faster. To get the most out of your trailer, avoid overloading or exceeding the recommended load capacity to ensure the structural integrity of the trailer is maintained. Regular maintenance, inspections, and exterior cleaning can help you protect against rusting and catch mechanical problems early.

What are the benefits of an enclosed cargo trailer?

Whether used personally or commercially, cargo trailers can help you to make more out of your time and space. Some of the hidden benefits of cargo trailers include:

  • Added protection: With secure locks and enclosed walls, your belongings are not at the mercy of the elements and are secure all season long.
  • Increased security: Whether you are parked at home or on the road, an enclosed cargo trailer means there is a lower chance of having your items stolen or tossed out onto the road compared to an open trailer.
  • Additional storage: Utilize hanging space via hooks or shelves inside the trailer, allowing you to maximize your storage space without having to rely on a garage or shed.
  • Less maintenance: Every enclosed cargo trailer is designed with seals around each door that help prevent dust, moisture, and pests from entering the trailer, making it easier to tuck it away for long periods without the need to clean.
  • Affordability: If you have debated renting versus buying a trailer, owning an enclosed cargo trailer pays for itself after 4 loads, saving you money and time.

Do cargo trailers hold their value?

A trailer’s value is determined by how well it can be used for its intended purpose. The longer it can continue to be used for hauling, the longer it will train its value. Unlike open trailers which deteriorate faster, enclosed cargo trailers are known for holding their value longer. To help retain the value of your cargo trailer, there are extra steps you can take such as applying an undercoating to protect the bottom of your trailer from salt, rocks, dirt, and heat. Regularly inspect the walls, floors, and ceiling for any signs of damage that may impact the quality of the materials used. By lubricating the bearing systems each season, you can also keep an eye on the wear of your tires as they are the first thing to show signs of aging.

5 Things to look for when buying an enclosed cargo trailer

  • Load Capacity: How much do you need to carry? The average load capacity of a cargo trailer is between 1000 and 10,000 pounds. Larger cargo trailers that are 12 ft or longer can carry an average of 4000, while small cargo trailers less than 12 ft carry an average of 1000.
  • Trailer size: Similar to load capacity, think about what you will be towing and the towing capacity for your vehicle. The hitch size needs to be compatible with your vehicle. Additionally, the height of the trailer will impact your fuel mileage. You can minimize drag by opting for a trailer that is standard height or equal to the height of your vehicle.
  • Axles: Will you be using it primarily on paved highways or will it be used for offroading? Cargo trailers are typically 1 or 2 axles. Keep in mind that two-axle trailers are more stable on rough road conditions and can handle more weight.
  • Details: The value is in the fine details. Look for cargo trailers that are built with quality flooring, exterior materials and fasteners. Another detail to consider is the shape of the cargo trailer: V-nose trailers are more aerodynamic and reduce drag, making it easier for your vehicle to tow.
  • Customization: Depending on your towing needs, consider a cargo trailer that can be built with awning doors or ramps. You can also customize the interior with additional shelving or hooks to create more floor space.
