How to Keep Mice out of Your RV

When mice get inside your RV, it can be a nightmare. RVs are supposed to take you away from all of life’s troubles, not create new ones for you to deal with in remote areas. If there’s one thing that can ruin a camping trip for you and your family, it’s dealing with mice getting inside your RV. But with the helpful tips outlined below, you can keep mice out of your RV. We also provide the information you need to learn how mice are getting inside and what to do if you’re facing an infestation.

Grove RV specializes in providing families with quality RVs that allow them to explore the outdoors – mice free! So we know a thing or two about dealing with this problem. If you have any lingering questions after reading this blog post, contact our knowledgeable team, and we’ll provide further insight into keeping mice out of your RV!

How are mice getting inside your RV?

Mice are small and nimble, which makes it easy for them to sneak into your RV through tiny cavities and cracks. In fact, a mouse only needs an opening the size of a dime to work its way through. Gaps in your windows, doors, siding or underbelly can all be points of entry for this industrious pest.

Mice are also excellent climbers, which means that no part of your RV is off limits. Make sure you inspect the undercarriage and roof for any gaps or holes.

If they do manage to get inside, they will be more than happy to create a cozy new homestead for themselves and the whole colony (they love the heat!). So, if they haven’t yet found a way in, our first action should be doing everything we can to keep them out.

What keeps mice away permanently from my RV?

Ensure your RV is kept as clean as possible with no open food containers. Mice have a very keen sense of smell, used not only to detect food but also predators and potential mates. They’re incredibly sensitive to even the faintest scent of food, and so it’s important to make sure that crumbs, spills, and stains are removed with efficiency and regularity.

What is the best product to use to get rid of mice?

There may be several holes, siding fractures, roof cracks and other openings that you’re not currently aware of in and around your RV. Go over the entire unit with a fine toothed comb, especially around doors, windows, and the undercarriage.

Caulking, weatherstripping, and even steel wool are good options to seal off potential entry points.

Another great line of defense is the use of natural and chemical repellents. Peppermint oil is an excellent natural mouse repellent that you can place on cotton balls and stuff into vulnerable gaps or crevices. Dryer sheets, ammonia, and even ultrasonic devices can be effective as well.

Sprays, baits, and traps are other common preventative solutions.

How to get rid of mice inside your RV

It only takes one open door or one very determined rodent to find their way into your RV. If this is where you find yourself, here are three steps you can start to follow immediately:

  1. Identify and seal off any entry points to prevent further infestation.
  2. Clean and sanitize the RV to further discourage any rodent activity (this includes removing any food sources).
  3. Use traps or bait stations to capture and/or kill the mice. Check them regularly to get this done as quickly as possible. Mice are more than happy to habituate themselves and feed on your wiring or insulation.

What other solutions are there?

You can also consider hiring a professional exterminator who will be able to offer more industrial solutions to get rid of the problem. Starting with a blank slate can allow you to take a breath and focus on preventative measures without worrying about an active infestation.
